The project is meant to valorize the Towers in the land of the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero for a total of 11 fortified structures with the creation of a path (meant like a tour) of 199 km, that takes about 4 hours and half by car. The initiative gives a tourist value to the Langhe and Roero areas and more generally to the new UNESCO site on the vineyard landscape and the fortified structures which, depending on the needs and historical circumstances, were built on the hills between the river Po and the Ligurian Apennines. It ranges from the Fourteenth Century structures of fortification to the period of Del Carretto family and the works by Visconti, not to mention isolated cases of noble towers as Corneliano or even important ruins such as Santo Stefano Belbo’s that allow a historical analysis of the site. Some of the sites offer other integrated insights to the land of major interest such as Cortemilia (next to the tower where we find the most impressive system of fortified walls in the Langhe) or Murazzano, where together with the tower you can visit the only windmill in the region, or Castelnuovo Ceva, where the watchtower on the church of San Maurizio, a Gothic jewel of a high artistic value, is placed.
The towns with the towers are not only fascinating, but also provide the visitor a better insight on a single territorial geomorphology, combining the Apennine mountains (and in the case of Castelnuovo di Ceva, even the distant line of the sea itself) to the nearest hills of Roero, Langhe and Monferrato.
In fact, what could be a fitter artifact to appreciate a landscape, if not a tower or a building built to look over the land? The landscape, the only one that UNESCO now recognizes, can be captured in a single glance: the hills that gradually rise from the river up to the rock wall of Cadibona, Melogno or Nava and fade away between vines, pastures and woods.
From the top of Barbaresco Tower (the starting point of this tour, while another tour will start from the Torre dei Segnali in Viarigi, Monferrato) embraces an incredible view ranging from the nearer monregalese area to the first mountains of Lombardy, with the sea underlying the hills in a unique vineyard landscape that has been declared a World Heritage.
These are the values and opportunities which the towers of Langhe, Monferrato and Roero already offer to the visitor.
